Where do I Start?

Learning to drive is an exciting adventure, but where do you start?

STEP 1) Provisional License
You might be eager to get going, but before you can start your driving tuition you will need to hold a UK Provisional Driving License- this can take up to three weeks from the DVSA receiving your application.

You can either apply for your license online or pick up a D1 Form from your local post office. By applying online you get a reduced fee of £34.

If you are a foreign national, you may need to exchange your EEA/ EC License for a British Provisional License.
The fee for this is £50

Please note, you must advise the DVLA of any medical conditions/disabilities when applying for a provisional license, or that may effect an existing license.

STEP 2) Theory Test
You might be feeling enthusiastic and wanting to get your theory test complete. We can help you with this, recommending mobile apps & books that you might find helpful when studying at home.

Once you're feeling ready you can apply for your Theory Test online.
You will need:
- Your current provisional licence
- A debit/credit card to pay the £23 fee

STEP 3) Practical Driving Test
To take the Practical Driving Test you must hold a Provisional Driving Licence and have already passed your Theory Test.

The Practical Test may have an extended wait time of around 4-10 weeks. On completion of a successful mock test, your driving instructor will book a driving test with you. It is essential that your test is booked by your instructor so that the vehicle, instructor and you are all available on the same date.

The Practical Driving test fee is either £62.00 for a test during the week, or £75.00 for a weekend test.

It is the students responsibility to take to the test centre, the following documents or you will not be able to sit your test and neither the DVSA test fee or driving lesson will be refunded:
1) Your valid photo card licence
2) Your theory test pass certificate
3) Your appointment letter
STEP 4) On The Road
After passing your test you will usually receive your full UK Driving License within three weeks.
Provided your car is legal (has a valid MOT and Road Tax), you can insure your own vehicle the same day as passing your test using your pass certificate number whilst you await your license in the post.
At this time, you may wish to consider further instruction such as a Pass Plus Course, as this can lower your car insurance by up to 30% with participating insurance companies.
