Independent Driving

INDEPENDENT DRIVE EXPLAINED...

As part of the practical test, learner drivers will be asked to complete approximately 20 minutes of independent driving. You will also be asked to follow a series of directions, traffic signs, and follow the instructions of a GPS/ Sat Nav System as of 4th December 2017.

Independent Driving is designed to test the learner's ability to drive unsupervised,  make decisions without guidance and in unfamiliar contexts. Nevertheless, to help you understand where you are going, the examiner may show you a diagram.

It doesn't matter if you don't remember every direction, or if you go the wrong way - that can happen to the most experienced of drivers. Relax, breathe, the examiner will re-direct you, or if there are times when signs are not visible, the examiner may interject and give your verbal directions.

Feel free to reconfirm the directions with the examiner if you are uncertain. Remember, once you have passed your test you will be seeking directions from your friends and family if you are uncertain of where you are headed and so, as long you are asking the examiner at a safe and appropriate time for confirmation this will not hinder your test.
